Acupuncture Integrated with Functional Medicine

Overweight and obesity have become global pandemics. Over the years, numerous drugs and procedures have been developed to combat obesity. However, most of these solutions yield only temporary results, with weight often returning once the treatment is stopped. Is there a way to achieve lasting weight loss?

Root Causes of Overweight and Obesity

1. Metabolic Dysfunction

Your metabolic health depends on your cells’ ability to respond to insulin signals, utilize glucose, and convert it into energy. When your diet provides excessive glucose, some cellular insulin receptors may shut down. This condition, known as insulin resistance, prevents cells from absorbing glucose, leaving it in the bloodstream.

Over time, excess glucose is stored as fat in muscles and internal organs, leading to overweight/obesity, fatty liver, and high triglycerides.

2. Gut Dysbiosis

Healthy gut bacteria play a crucial role in supporting insulin signaling. Factors such as antibiotics, the standard American diet, sugary drinks, processed foods, and sedentary lifestyles can disrupt this balance, causing a condition known as dysbiosis.
Dysbiosis can impair insulin signaling, leading to insulin resistance and weight gain. It may also damage gut permeability, causing “leaky gut,” where gut contents leak into the bloodstream. This triggers immune responses and systemic inflammation.

3. Inflammation

Systemic inflammation—caused by stress, environmental toxins, or leaky gut—can disrupt insulin signaling and lead to insulin resistance. Additionally, stored fat (adipose tissue) releases hormones (like estrone) and inflammatory cytokines (e.g., IL-6, TNF-α). Excess estrone can cause hormonal imbalances and worsen inflammation.

Inflammatory cytokines can harm internal organs and cross the blood-brain barrier, potentially leading to brain fog, memory loss, depression, and even dementia.

Why Drugs Alone Don’t Work

Weight loss drugs often fail to address these root causes comprehensively. Without tackling metabolic dysfunction, gut dysbiosis, and inflammation together, results are either temporary or nonexistent. Additionally, non-optimal lipid profiles, hormonal imbalances, and thyroid dysfunction must also be considered in effective weight loss strategies.

Introducing the Personalized Weight Loss Program

For over 30 years, I have utilized acupuncture to support weight loss. Acupuncture has proven highly effective in relieving stress, decreasing appetite, promoting bowel movements, balancing female hormones, and improving thyroid function. However, results varied, and I realized that a more comprehensive approach was needed.

In May 2024, I completed a Functional Medicine course. This training enabled me to design a personalized program targeting each individual’s unique root causes of weight gain. The program includes:

Key Components of the Program
